How Many Public EV Chargers are there in the UK?
For decades, the world has been built around petrol and diesel engines, with convenience designed to support them. No matter where you are in the UK, you can usually find a petrol station quickly and easily. Long road trips require little planning beyond knowing you will eventually need to stop for fuel.
For many people, this has been one of the biggest concerns surrounding electric vehicles in the UK. The infrastructure behind EVs was often seen as lacking, with charging points harder to find and long journeys requiring carefully planned stops and lengthy charging times. Society was built for the convenience of older engines, but as history has shown, industries evolve. From the Iron Age to the Industrial Revolution and now into the contemporary era, progress continually reshapes the way we live, the way we travel and today the way we drive.
The modern era has brought rapid technological advancement, greater interconnectedness, and major innovations across countless industries. For electric vehicles, this has meant a dramatic expansion in charging infrastructure, evolving into something that is beginning to rival, maybe even triumph the convenience of traditional fuel networks.
As of April 2026, and according to ZapMap the UK has the following number of public EV chargers:
3kW – 8kW (Standard): 60,178
8kW – 50kW (Standard Plus): 32,121
50kW – 150kW (Rapid): 14,743
150kW+ (Ultra Rapid): 13,346
This brings the UK total to more than 120,000 public charging points.
When compared with traditional fuel infrastructure, the scale of this growth is striking. The UK is estimated to have around 60,800 petrol pumps, meaning public EV charging points now significantly outnumber fuel pumps across the country.
While charging an electric vehicle is still not as fast as refuelling a petrol or diesel car, the infrastructure supporting EVs has expanded enormously in a relatively short period of time. What once felt inconvenient and restrictive is steadily becoming more accessible, practical, and integrated into everyday travel.
Adoption, infrastructure, and the global push toward a greener future have driven electric vehicles far beyond the stage of innovators and early adopters. EVs are now firmly within the early majority phase, becoming a common sight on UK roads. With the continued rise in electric vehicle ownership, there are now more used EVs on the market than ever before and this trend is only expected to grow in the years ahead.
As the EV market expands, electric vehicle warranties are becoming just as important as the extended warranties long associated with petrol and diesel cars. While manufacturer warranties come as standard with new vehicles, once they expire, owners become financially responsible for unexpected mechanical and electrical faults.
There are many extended warranty products on the market, much like our own AutoElectric warranty, designed to help cover the cost of unexpected repairs and replacements, including:
- Cover for key EV drive and power management components, such as power controller, electric drive motor, power converter / inverter module, onboard charger, coolant heater, regenerative braking systems (excluding brake pads and discs) and associated control modules*
- High-voltage traction battery cover* (excluding standard 12/24v lead-acid batteries). High-voltage battery claims are limited to 50% of the per-claim limit
- Diagnostic contribution of up to £65 inc. VAT per valid claim
- Repair costs covered up to £2,000 per claim, subject to policy terms and component notes
- Wheel bearings and coil springs covered on vehicles up to 6 years old or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first*
